Summary

Mitsubishi Power Europe's Engineering team supports the maintenance and operation of industry leading Steam and Gas Turbines, Generators as well as associated equipment. In order to support the operation and maintenance of this equipment we are looking for a recent graduate/Junior Design Engineer (FEM/CAD). The role involves developing complex FEM models to solve mechanical reliability issues and to perform root cause investigation, as well as reverse engineering and product development for gas and steam turbine projects.

Job Description

  • Mitsubishi Power Europe is seeking a recent graduate Design Engineer (FEM/CAD) to work on design and modification of gas turbine and steam turbine components.
  • The Design engineer will be responsible for developing complex design models including:
    • CAD geometries and technical drawings,
    • FEA thermal and structural analysis,
    • Root cause investigations and reports.
  • The above will be supervise by one of the Senior Design Engineers from the PLM Team.

  • The Design Engineer will be expected to support the engineering team from initial design development, through prototyping and testing to first article review and manufacturing. Thus, providing the engineering department with wide ranging support to develop new products as well as analyse and develop and repair of existing ones.
  • Previous experience / knowledge that will be taken in consideration:
    • Thermal & Structural mastering to enhance to interpretation of the FEA models.
    • Heat Transfer Coefficient calculations.
    • Crack Propagation Analysis and estimate Life Assessments.
    • design and/or analysis of gas/steam turbine components, materials and processes, manufacturing methods and test procedures.
  • Perform detailed engineering work related to product design and analysis including:
    • Collecting and analysing raw data from the re-engineering/fact finding processes
    • Configuring, deploying, maintaining and upgrading CAD & FEM models and boundary conditions.
    • Specifying, developing and running computational models.
    • Determine limitations, assumptions and solutions in the design and development of components.
    • Determine design specifications and parameters for production.
  • Work with engineering department to develop and manufacture specific products.
  • Produce detailed design documentation to control development, testing and manufacture including drawings, specifications, and quality control for manufacture.
  • Liaise with front line engineers, supply chain and consultants to evaluate and evolve designs.
  • Liaise with consultants and vendors through-out the development process to ensure optimal technical and manufacturing performance.
  • Understand implication of manufacturing methods on design and implement a “design for manufacture” mentality.
  • Plan and manage project stages and milestones including:
    • Estimating time and costs required to complete project.
    • Ensure that all work carried out is in compliance with company values, procedures and standards.
    • Provide regular reports and presentation, documenting progress and open actions.
  • Respond to internal and external customer requests for technical clarifications/resolution, using technical product knowledge and analytical skills while adhering to sound engineering principles, standards, practices, procedures.
  • Manage project progress, engaging with all contributors, identifying and resolving issues – escalating as required.
  • Defining road maps and quantifying all require efforts (internal/external) with the goal to prepare corresponding proposals in collaboration with Sales & PMs.
  • Communicate clearly with multiple departments and internal/external partners to clarify and document all project-related issues allowing progression and evaluation throughout the project life.
  • Preparation of technical documentation, reports, specifications and drawings required to support the development, to the corporate (and external if required) standards.
  • Travel typically within EMEA, but also elsewhere, when required to customers, sites, partner organisations for meetings, presentations, or technical investigations.
  • Development of proactive working procedures for future work efficiency.
  • To write and or revise Quality Management procedures as and when required.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Ability to work autonomously, taking the lead in development of solutions, whilst working to deadlines.

Person specification

 

  • Minimum level of a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical / Aeronautical Engineering or similar.
  • Solid understanding of Engineering fundamentals:
    • Strength of Materials - Materials Science and Metallurgy,
    • Fluid Mechanics,
    • Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer,
    • Machine Design- Dynamics of Machines and Vibrations,
    • Production Technologies and Machinery
  • proven skills in at least three (3) of the following items & software’s:
    • CAD (CREO)
    • Finite Element Modelling (ANSYS)
    • Stress and thermo-mechanical Analysis (ANSYS)
    • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD OPENFOAM).
    • Crack Propagation Analysis.
  • Familiarity with programming (e.g., Python, VBA) to develop bespoke analysis, hand calculations to support simple engineering studies would be useful.
  • Ability to plan and develop technical projects.
  • Ability to prioritise workflow and deliver high quality feedback in a timely fashion.
  • Demonstrable organizational skills.
  • Sound oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and team-orientated approach.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team with people with different cultures and nationalities.
  • Fluency in business English, knowledge of Japanese would be an advantage but not essential.
  • Ability to produce high quality technical reports in English
